The eyes are painted and cast downwards, and the corner of the lips curve upwards in a gentle smile. A nine-pronged crown with a three-tiered finial and small side flanges sits on the head. Large incised pendant earrings decorate each ear.
The Buddha image is seen here seated on a single lotus pedestal with the right hand in Bhumisparsa mudra, touching the earth or calling the earth to witness, depicting the moment of enlightenment when the Buddha called the Earth Goddess to witness his defeat of the demon Mara and his army in their attempt to hinder him from achieving enlightenment.
Some original lacquer remains. The lotus petals across the front of the base are beautifully carved in careful detail.
