Gilded Bronze 19th Century Mandalay Buddha Statue seated in Vairasana posture with the right hand in bhumisparsa mudra “touching the earth mudra”. A double row of glass mosaics decorates the forehead extending from ear to ear with a glass mosaic medallion decorating the centre of the forehead, eye inserts are ceramic. The robe on this statue is beautifully decorated with a layered frilled lapel with a frilled hemline extending out on both sides of the knees..
When purchasing this statue, I commented on the rather peculiar facial expression compared to most other Burmese Buddha statues in our collection. I was told by the seller that some figures were made with faces resembling western features during the British occupation, this image may be one of those. I also don’t know if this is fact.
